Tour de Kurjenrahka

Three weeks ago we had a full-blown winter with subzero temps for over a week and a bit of snow. Smaller lakes and even rivers freezed fairly quickly, so I was instantly thinking about the mires of Kurjenrahka National Park. Me, Peter and JJ had an excellent outing there in March and we crossed all the mires by riding our fatbikes. Two weeks ago me and Peter decided to go back and do the same tour as in March. But the conditions were...

ROVANIEMI 150 – RACE REPORT

When heading out to Rovaniemi 150 I already knew I needed to be prepared for pretty much anything. I had spent countless hours on my bike and believed myself to be in best biking form ever. My gear had been tested with long rides in -27c and I was stocked up with energy and motivation. The only thing I really wasn´t prepared for was pushing the bike through soft snow for 100k out of the 150k race – and that´s exactly what happened....

Team Fatty tackle the Yorkshire Dales 300

Best Laid Plans It’s November 2015 and my good friend and top adventure companion Colin asks if I’d like to enter the YorkshireDales300. “What’s it all about?” I asked, Colin replied ‘we need to do a bivi ride covering 300km in the Yorkshire Dales over 3 days’. Stupidly, I say ‘Sounds brill – let’s do it!’ Fast forward to February and we’re out on our 2 nd bivi of the year complaining that it isn’t cold enough and we got chatting...

Bay of Bothnia Whiteout

One of the benefits of living on the 65 latitude is the frozen sea. Luleå is located far up north in the Bay of Bothina, Swedish Lapland. For a couple of years I’ve been longing to go far out in the archipelago. But the ice has not been thick enough. For me fat biking in the winter is all about getting out on the ice. Due to little snow and a few super cold weeks in February it is finally possible. We have ice roads to a couple...

A romantic weekend in the Engadin

It’s Thursday evening. After a long day at work I walk up the wooden stairs, marked with a couple of years of cleat abuse, to find Laura’s fat bike already packed and ready for a weekend in the snow. A little pride goes in the self-made bags and so I check them thoroughly only to realise that Laura has done a perfect job packing and getting her stuff ready and I need not to touch anything but my own gear and get my bike ready too....

First look: Skipulk.com sled

After one too many ascents spent dragging my sorry ass, fatbike and full bikepacking kit through deep snow I had a revelation….. Would a Ski Pulk work for a fatbike, help spread the weight and mean that I could go further and visit previously inaccessible locations? Not only that but how about taking snow shoes and then mounting the bike on the pulk (when the going gets really tough) and pulling it up the mountain?...
